PETROL

Petrol Installation Image

Petrol
An infinity mirror, moving light installation in an oil barrel.

The piece creates a pool of moving lights in a dark, oily looking, mirrored surface. The infinite appearance of the lights emulates the many creatures and years taken to form the oil, the ‘bubbling-up’ effect of the lights representing the chemical distillation process, and the patterns, rhythms and colours of the light beams shining up through the ‘bubbles’ reflecting the traffic fuelled by the petrol.

The piece was made after a period of research on Carless, Capel and Leonard whose distilling and oil refining business invented the brand name petrol. The business was originally sited at Hope Chemical Works on White Post Lane, Hackney Wick; the same road as my studio.

Materials: Refurbished oil drum, mirror, two-way mirror, lighting, fixings.
